    Big eBay Seller Vanishes

    Just a few months ago, Glacier Bay DVD was crowing about becoming one of eBay’s very top sellers, with the highest positive customer feedback rating of any merchant on the marketplace. Today, despite having amassed some 268,199 feedback ratings from customers over more than six years on eBay, it’s gone. Or as they say in eBay parlance, NARU’d—“No longer A Registered User”—which can mean everything from merchants simply quitting to eBay kicking them off for not paying bills or getting too many complaints.

    Why Sell On eBay?

    There are many reasons why a person might want to sell a particular item on eBay, perhaps to make some money off an unwanted gift, or pare down a collection that is taking up too much house space, or even to start (or perhaps extend) a business venture. Whatever the reason, the convenience offered by the online auction format is second to none. Once the basic procedure is learned, it is child’s play to list something for sale and then sit back and wait for the bidding to start. Ultimately, it is a simple process to make money on eBay!

    I believe it is this simplicity and convenience that is at the heart of eBay’s incredible success. It is relatively simple and convenient to sell, and should be simple and convenient to buy. This is an important point to note. As sellers, we need to exploit this convenience and make it as easy and straightforward as possible for a buyer to obtain our items. Try not to leave anything to chance, do the legwork for your buyers and they will reward you with their custom (I will expand on this idea later).

    When buying products online from you the consumer must have total trust in your website/company. If there is anything they are unsure of they will leave your site and buy from a competitor they are comfortable with. There are several boxes that if you can’t tick then the orders won’t come in.

    Determining Where to Sell Online

    Whether you’re unloading collectibles from your attic or taking your thriving brick-and-mortar store online, there’s a surfeit of Internet marketplaces where you can set up shop. From giants like eBay (EBAY) to niche sites like Etsy to listing services like Craigslist, the choices can overwhelm a small business owner venturing into e-commerce. How do you decide which marketplaces best fit your business? For small retailers facing what some economists are predicting to be the toughest holiday season since 1991 (BusinessWeek.com, 9/23/08), it’s a particularly compelling question.

    There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, though e-commerce experts tend to agree it’s worth listing on multiple sites. The e-commerce market is huge, with $60 billion worth of goods traded on eBay alone in 2007, according to the company. More than 85,000 businesses primarily operated as electronic or mail-order retailers in 2006, according to the latest U.S. Census data, and 77,000 of them had no employees. Finding the best platforms for your company depends on what you sell.

    Stimulus: What’s In It For Small Biz?

    The number of small business loans banks issue has cratered since the recession took root last year. Rebuilding that number is the focus of the small business provisions in the economic recovery bill that President Obama signed into law on Tuesday.

    The bill authorizes the Small Business Administration to temporarily eliminate or reduce fees for participation in its flagship loan-guarantee programs, which insure banks against default by small business borrowers. The stimulus bill also increases to 90% the percentage of qualifying loans that the SBA can guarantee.
